Cherry Fine dining Table /Gaming table

MY second table like this in less then a year and I really! hope they keep coming!
A fine piece of dining-room furniture that transforms into a very cool practical Board gaming Table.

Client contacted me after seeing the first X base table I did in very heavily figured
yellow Birch all from one log and the Walnut dining/games table I did last summer.
He asked if I could do one like the X base table with one massive center leaf that can be flipped and lined with leather and two smaller end leafs. I said -Lets do it!!!

Plenty of challenge in this on and as usual I hid most of the joinery and made it look as simple as possible, since yellow birch like the other is almost impossible to find again I suggested curly Cherry and I am as happy with the end result as the client is.

Thank you for having a look.

rough Cherry left is 6 8/4″ pieces aka 2″ thick the rest is 4/4″ or 1″ stock

one cool thing with this table is everything is made from one piece , each base from one pc , top frame , skirt boards are one pc split then laid out in line

Traditional Woodworking Bench

I build mostly hand made furniture and 3 years ago I lost everything I owned
in just one day ,also had a near death car accident that day that should have
killed me , so All good.

My only way of making a living is woodworking , so once managing to acquire some very basic power and hand tools I desperately needed a bench. To some the the table saw or a big band saw are the heart of there shops. For me a versatile Joinery bench  is with out a doubt! So I took every penny I have plus ,and a solid month to build an solid hard maple bench that will suit all my needs.

I have built many benches over the years both for my own use as well as for other, this one I have been wanting to make for a very long time. The bench has traditional four leg base with sled feet eliminating any raking . a solid maple top -all are carefully selected from one lift of maple . the lower stretchers are 1 3/4″ by 5″ Cherry , the front and rear vise jaws are 3 1/2″ by 6 and 7″ cherry as well.

Thank you for having a look

Top lamination 15 pieces 2.5" thick by 1.75" wide. three glue ups of 5 pieces jointed and planed then all laminated together, rough size is 73"by28"

Hard maple bench top

basically the whole bench minus top skirt boards and vise jaws

glued up tops, legs /feet& milled upper and lower stretchers

Base components: 2 Feet 3.5"by3" by 30 Legs: 4 pieces 32' by 3"by3.5" Base tops 2 pieces 4"by 3"by30" Stretchers 50"by 4" by 2" and 2 5" tall

All the base parts fully milled and mortise and tenons cut

009011012

I went with "draw bore tenons" on all 3 -12" by 3" hard maple dowels per tenon equals 48 pins over all

Bench base ,sides assembled ,stretchers ready for final assembly

030

060

Base fully assembled and sanded for finishing

Top aprons 2" by 6" on front and 2 ends base attached by two lag bolts and fitting front vise

Ambrosia Maple Master piece :)

HAPPY WIFE -HAPPY LIFE
Finally I am creating a Dining set for the love of my life.
Maple table top black walnut bases, and figured black cherry sculpted chairs

We Started with a 12 foot long 13 ish inch wide 3 inch thick book matched set of
Big leaf maple slabs. suppliers name this “Ambrosia maple” but I would rather not name wood after
the insect which caused its death (the ambrosia beetle)

bookmatched 12 foot Ambrosia maple slabs
First step was to cut both slabs in half length wise , three peices becoming the top
anther the bench top

After my mind flipping back and fourth on doing a crazy bent lamination to look like cast iron
My smarter half really liked the two completely different X base tables I had done a few years ago.
We found the perfect piece of walnut to do the entire table base from 2″ thick X 15″ X7′ long.

Then we found a second board from same stock for bench legs!!

NFL FOOTBALL Helmet Display with Fireplace insert

I just finished up this Hard Maple unit for a huge Football fans “man cave”

The unit is 9 feet long by 36″ tall by 12″ deep 16 miniature football (NFL) helmets on each
side of the fireplace which will be surrounded by textured metal I believe.

Not something I do often , but client will be finishing this one on his own.

Client assures me I will get finished photos. if so I will post them as an example of cabinet work.

Thank you for looking.

Free building aka design as you go

I am working on a Cherry piece right now , I was asked to build a place for an Lawyer to put his books
in his downtown high-rise office by the owner of a cabinet shop I worked at for a couple weeks before
I went to Vancouver to work on my friends heritage home.

Was interesting that he gave me little to go one and said ” you design it as you go” as if he was giving me a gift 🙂
actually it is twice as much work and puts all the weight on me if neither of them like the end product!
On the inside I was smiling because “this is what I do!” I free build with nothing but end dimensions and the function of the piece in mind. No drawings, no rigid demands, jsut me and the tree I start with figuring out how to give it an long lasting second live.

I saw many issues with the over all design with the (limited!) stock I was given to create the top, in fact i was only given the
piece of cherry for the top. So I made the top and then did a full size drawing of my take on the piece.

Top slab 20″ish X56″ ish-after I flattened it and ripped it in half:

This is one of the issues I had from the get go, but I have a plan 🙂

Recent & on going work , 1911 Heritage Home…

In July a friend of 30 years flew me out to Vancouver to work on her floor , stairs , Front door and millwork
in her 1911 Character home in old East Vancouver. This was another one of those 3 months work in 19 days
Actually I worked 200 hours in 19 days and pull off a lot of work.

I lifted floor from a back powder room off the kitchen in back of the home to be able to make some large patches.
My suggestion was to lift the old floor to get perfect match on patches and tile the powder room and small hall way.

Two Tables in one- GAMES TABLE/DINNING TABLE

I have justed finished a pretty fun commission of a Walnut table with Cherry inlays,
Client asked for a Gaming table to play games like Warhammer etc as well as Poker and many other
games I believe.
They wanted the table to also serve a double purpose as a dinning table.
I saw it in a different direction and designed an Fine dinning table that morphs into a very cool games table,
Complete with LAD lights around playing surfaces, custom drink holders that attach to bottom of the skirts ,
but when not in use one would never know the exist, Made an custom opener to remove top when setting up for Play.
One of the coolest things I thought of his idea of this table is you can put the tongue and groove top over the set up game ,have a big dinner and come back to the on going game at any time.
